News from the Moms and Dads Associations

The deadline to enter this year's Tuition Drawing for 1st prize of two semesters in-state tuition and 2nd prize of one semester in-state tuition is approaching quickly. Your Tuition Tickets must be received by November 16th, 2007. The drawing will be held on November 17th at the home football game vs. Northwestern.

Please urge your student to log on to the emergency system Web site at emergency.illinois.edu and enter their contact information. The Urbana-Champaign campus of the UI is launching a new emergency communication system that will alert students and faculty and staff members to crisis situations on campus through mass cell-phone text and e-mail messages. Each person can enter up to three e-mail addresses and two text message addresses. Users can change, add to or delete their contact information at any time. Learn More

Videos of the Conference for Illini Parents are now available online. The videos highlight some of the featured speakers and provide a wealth of information on the services and resources available to your students.

The Dads Association will be awarding four $500 scholarships in January 2008. The application must be completed and returned by November 30, 2007.

Parents and guardians of Illinois students are just a few clicks away from being connected while visiting campus with two new ways to stay connected: Guestnet and UI Public Wireless.

Exploring Graduate School Options Workshop

Students can explore reasons for considering graduate school, learn more about selecting and evaluating programs, and discuss the applications and admissions process.

Inner Voices: Stories That Need to be Told

Continuing the efforts of Domestic Violence Awareness Month these performances give voice to different stories that bring a deeper understanding of the dynamics and impact of violence and abuse in intimate relationships. These issues not only affect people who experience and use abuse in relationships but also have far reaching effects on children, loved ones, friends, family, the workplace and our communities.

2008 Intensive Foreign Language Instruction Program Classes Offered

UI foreign languages departments are offering classes through the Intensive Foreign Language Instruction Program (IFLIP), which is open to students, faculty and staff members, and the public. Registration deadline is Nov. 16; classes will be offered Jan. 2-11.

College of Communications Freshmen Discovery courses announced for Spring 2008

Freshmen planning their courses for the spring semester should take a look at these College of Communications Discovery courses in Advertising, Journalism and Media Studies.

$30K Lemelson-Illinois Student Prize

The Technology Entrepreneur Center is seeking student applications for the $30K Lemelson-Illinois Student Prize for outstanding innovation. All undergraduate and graduate students are eligible; entries are due by 5 p.m. Nov. 30 to the TEC. Encourage your students to attend an information session or to apply.

Summer Study Abroad Open House

Students can learn about study abroad opportunities available during the summer. All majors and levels of study welcome.

Passport Application Session

Does your student need a Passport? On Monday, November 12th, students can apply for one right on campus. Your student will need to stop in to 212 Engineering Hall from 1:30-5:30pm to submit their application.

Students: Meet Your Student Trustee

Students can come hear the Urbana Student Trustee, Chime Asonye, discuss his role for students and goals during his tenure, as well as answer any questions. Also, check out the website: www.studenttrustee.uiuc.edu. A great opportunity to voice concerns and see what's being done for students on campus on Thursday, November 15, 2007 from 7:00pm - 8:00pm in the Illini Union Pine Lounge (NW Corner of Union, 1st Floor).

Students can Reserve their Holiday Baked Goods Through the Illini Union Ballroom

The Illini Union Ballroom is offering its famous pies, cakes, and rolls for your holiday table. Students should make reservations by 12 noon on Monday, November 19, for pickup on Wednesday, November 21, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Colonial Room.

Quad Cam

The new Quad Cam is now available. You can take control of the camera to check out what's happening in one of the most beloved campus locations. The Quad Cam is mounted high on Foellinger Auditorium, looking north across the Quad to the Illini Union.

Illinois Army ROTC excel in Brigade Ranger Challenge

During the October 19th-21st weekend, 15 University of Illinois Army ROTC Cadets participated in the 9th Brigade Ranger Challenge Competition at Camp Atterbury, Indiana. The event tests cadets' physical and mental endurance over a three-day period as teams contend for the honor of defeating all opposition in this contest of wits, skill, and strength. Eighteen universities took part in the competition including Illinois, Indiana, Purdue, Michigan, and Michigan State in the Big Ten Conference. Full Story

U of I Students Take Robotic Harvesting System on the Road

Automated harvesting is considered science fantasy by some farmers, but students at the University of Illinois have developed a small-scale harvesting model that could help bring fantasy one step closer to reality. Students in the Off-Road Equipment Management class in the department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ABE) have developed an autonomous harvester-to-bin system that uses wireless communication to synchronize the action between a harvester and an unloader. The team recently took their project to the robotics demonstration at the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers Annual International Meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Full Story

MechSE Professor to Receive Presidential Early Career Award

Carlos Pantano-Rubino, an assistant professor of mechanical science and engineering, is among 58 young researchers named as recipients of the 2006 Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers, the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on young professionals at the outset of their independent research careers. CNST associate director receives a C-U Humanitarian Award

Irfan Ahmad, associate director at the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology, is one of six recipients of the 2007 Champaign-Urbana International Humanitarian Award. The honor, which recognizes "significant contributions to international understanding, cooperation, friendship, and development," strives to educate the public about local and global community connections.
