News from the Mothers and Dads Associations

Looking for something to do on Saturdays this fall? The Mothers Association is looking for volunteers to work the craft tables at each of the home football games. It’s a lot of fun and a great way to be involved with the Association and get to know other Association members. The craft sales help fund projects such as the Safety Magnets and give the Association a great deal of visibility. If you are interested in helping out, contact Grace Reynolds at rglkrreynolds@msn.com or the Parent Programs Office at uiparents@ad.uiuc.edu.

Spanish-speaking volunteers needed to participate in Latino Family Visit Day on September 30th. Parents will be needed at various times throughout the day beginning at 8:30am and ending around 4pm. Please contact Becki Galardy for more information at uofiparents@ad.uiuc.edu or (217) 333-7063

Join the Dads Association as they celebrate their 85th year in service during the University of Illinois' Dads Weekend activities. The Association will begin the weekend on Friday, Oct. 5 with a reception at 5 pm in the South Lounge of the Illini Union and the Annual Banquet at 5:30 pm in the Illini Rooms of the Illini Union. Our guest speaker this year will be Coach Bruce Weber! The Dads Association will recognize the Library Award winners, the Certificate of Merit recipients and King Dad 2007 will be crowned. Click here for Dads Weekend 2007 Banquet/Tent/Football order form.

County Representatives serve as a resource for other Illini parents in their areas and meet other Illini parents from all over the country. Become a County Representative! If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity email the Parent Programs Office at uofiparents@ad.uiuc.edu or contact a County Representative from your area.

The 2007 Conference for Illini Parents well be held on Sept. 15 in Illini Room A located in the Illini Union. The Conference will begin at 8:30 am and wrap-up at 1:00 pm. We want to allow parents plenty of time in the afternoon to catch up with their students and explore campus. Pre-registration is required.

Nominations for the Board of Directors of the Dads Association are now being accepted. Elections will be held during Dads Weekend on October 6th at the breakfast meeting. Officers include a president, three vice-presidents, a treasurer and directors.

The Dads Association will be awarding four $500 scholarships in January 2008. The application must be completed and returned by November 30, 2007.

Each year the Dads Association awards the Certificate of Merit to a faculty member, student, staff, and student organization at their annual banquet during Dads Weekend. The award recipients will be presented with a monetary award as well as a personalized gift. Nominations are due by September 7, 2007 at 5pm.

Encourage other Illini parents to register their contact information with the Mothers and Dads Association! We will work with the Campus Risk Management Office to include parent information on the emergency alert system that is currently being developed.

Campus Safety Video and Quiz Available

The University of Illinois requires that all new students be educated on the safety issues and concerns that may arise on campus. Personal safety is always a concern, but while you are adjusting to the University of Illinois community it is important to be aware of your new surroundings.

Power Reading Course Offered

This fall, the Counseling Center will be offering a dynamic Power Reading Course designed to enhance students' academic abilities. Many gifted students find that taking a course in speed-reading gives them the upper hand in the classroom. The Power Reading Course fine-tunes students’ abilities to read more rapidly, with increased concentration and comprehension. Strategic reading techniques result in improved study and organizational skills, which have a direct impact on academic performance.

Campus Rec Lifeguards Needed

Applicants must be able to present a current (within 3 years) American Red Cross Lifeguard Training card (or equivalent) and a current (within 1 year) American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer or American Heart Association CPR/AED (Health Care Provider) card. Applicants must pass a water/skills test in order to be hired.
