News from the Mothers and Dads Associations

Join the Dads Association as they celebrate their 85th year in service during the University of Illinois' Dads Weekend activities. The Association will begin the weekend on Friday, Oct. 5 with a reception at 5 pm in the South Lounge of the Illini Union and the Annual Banquet at 5:30 pm in the Illini Rooms of the Illini Union. The Dads Association will recognize the Library Award winners, the Certificate of Merit recipients and King Dad 2007 will be crowned. Do you want to become more involved in the University of Illinois community? Do you want to be a resource for other Illini parents in your area and meet other Illini parents from all over the country? Become a County Representative! If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity email the Parent Programs Office at uofiparents@ad.uiuc.edu or contact a County Representative from your area.

The 2007 Conference for Illini Parents well be held on Sept. 15 in Illini Room A located in the Illini Union. The Conference will begin at 8:30 am and wrap-up at 1:00 pm. We want to allow parents plenty of time in the afternoon to catch up with their students and explore campus.

Nominations for the Board of Directors of the Dads Association are now being accepted. Elections will be held during Dads Weekend on October 6th at the breakfast meeting. Officers include a president, three vice-presidents, a treasurer and directors. Members of the Board are elected from among the county chairs.

The Dads Association will be awarding four $500 scholarships in January 2008. The application must be completed and returned by November 30, 2007. Parents must be members of either the Dads or Mothers Association.

Each year the University of Illinois Dads Association awards the Certificate of Merit to a faculty member, student, staff, and student organization at their annual banquet during Dads Weekend. The award recipients will be presented with a monetary award as well as a personalized gift. Nominations are due by September 7, 2007 at 5pm.

Encourage other Illini parents to register their contact information with the Mothers and Dads Association! We will work with the Campus Risk Management office to include parent information on the emergency alert system that is currently being developed. We will also use the information to add parents to our Listserv.

Important Dates

July 6, 2007 -- Deadline to drop or elect credit/no credit for 8-week courses, Summer 2
July 9, 2007 -- Beginning of 2nd 4-Week Period of Instruction
July 13, 2007 -- Deadline to add a second half-session course, Summer 2

Students May Update Student/Staff Directory Listing

Illini Union Welcome Week

Illini Union Welcome Week is your student’s first opportunity to learn what the Illini Union is all about. As the campus “living room”, the Union acts as a home away from home for many students; albeit a very busy, exciting and social home. Throughout Illini Union Welcome Week, beginning Thursday, August 16 and ending Saturday, August 25, students will have the opportunity to catch nationally know musical performers, comedians, join student organizations, use the Rec Room, learn about the services here in the Union and find out what being a part of the Illinois community is really about. Latenighter and Quad Day, two longstanding University of Illinois traditions, will be held on August 18 and August 21, respectively. At Latenighter students are invited to bring new and old friends to a free night of entertainment at the Illini Union. Activities last until 2am and there is sure to be something for everyone. Quad Day is your student’s opportunity to get involved with the nearly 1200 student organization on campus. A simple stop on the Quad anytime from 10am-3pm will illustrate just how much students do here at the U of I. This is a great way for students to connect with other students and to pursue, renew or jump into their unique interests. Welcome Week is sure to keep your student entertained, get your student connected and create wonderful memories from the time he or she arrives on campus. Portion of Kirby Avenue to Close Temporarily

A portion of Kirby Avenue is scheduled to be closed from July 5 – 16. This street closure is part of the South Campus Chilled Water Improvements project and will affect Kirby Avenue from First Street to Neil Street.

Bevier Cafe is Open for the Summer

Bevier Cafe, located on the second floor of Bevier Hall, is open for lunch Tuesday - Friday from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. during Summer Session II. The cafe is run by students in the Hospitality Management and Dietetics programs.

UIUC Summer Solar Employment Opportunity

The UI Solar Decathlon team will be hiring two additional students this summer to help complete the solar decathlon house. They are looking for people who could work on a regular basis at an hourly rate. This position would require some experience with light construction, a willingness to work with others and ability to coordinate workers on volunteer work days. The Solar Decathlon House framing and drywall are now being finished. The exterior and interior final work will be completed this summer. Students interested should contact Michael McCulley Associate professor in Architecture at mmccull@uiuc.edu or Ty Newell, Assistant Dean in Engineering at tynewell@uiuc.edu.

U. of I. provost Linda Katehi named to national committee by President Bush

The White House said today that President Bush intends to name Linda Katehi, the provost of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, to the President’s Committee on the National Medal of Science. Her three-year term would expire Dec. 31, 2009. Full Story

Special Event to Feature "Fresh from the Farm" Food

Hospitality management students, under the direction of renowned chef Jean-Louis Ledent in the University of Illinois Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, are preparing a five-course gourmet meal using locally grown fresh products on Friday, July 27. Full Story

Dennis Swanson recognized for achievement in television broadcasting

U of I alumnus Dennis Swanson, president of station operations for FOX Television Stations Group, recently received two prestigious industry honors. As part of its 25th anniversary issue (May 21, 2007), Television Week named Swanson one of the 25 legendary figures who have shaped the television industry. Full Story

Inaugural U. of I. summer festival to feature diverse blend of music

If University of Illinois School of Music director Karl Kramer’s vision becomes reality, the Allerton Music Barn Festival – to take place for the first time Aug. 31 through Sept. 3 at a pastoral site in Central Illinois – could find its own niche on the nation’s cultural map alongside some of the most reputable and best-known summer music festivals. In the meantime, the pilot version of the School of Music’s Labor Day weekend festival is expected to draw audiences from throughout the Midwest with its eclectic mix of music and culinary accompaniments.
