News from the Mothers and Dads Associations

Register your contact information with the Mothers and Dads Association! We will work with the Campus Risk Management office to include parent information on the emergency alert system that is currently being developed. We will also use the information to add parents to our Listserv.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED for Summer Registration starting on May 29 and ending on July 11 with late registration on August 15-17. We welcome all parents of Illinois students to come share their experiences with new Illini Parents. To volunteer or to learn more about this opportunity contact Becki Galardy at (217) 333-7063 or email at uofiparentsad.uiuc.edu.

The Dads Association will be awarding four $500 scholarships in January 2008. The application must be completed and returned by November 30, 2007. Parents must be members of either the Dads or Mothers Association.

Each year the University of Illinois Dads Association awards the Certificate of Merit to a faculty member, student, staff, and student organization at their annual banquet during Dads Weekend. The award recipients will be presented with a monetary award as well as a personalized gift. Nominations are due by September 7, 2007 at 5pm.

FAFSA Deadline

FAFSA on the Web and Renewal FAFSA on the Web applications for the 2006-2007 school year must be submitted by midnight Central Daylight time, July 2, 2007. Corrections on the Web forms must be submitted by midnight Central Daylight time, September 17, 2007.

'Hitman' E-mails are a Scam, CITES Security Says

Recently, members of the campus community received e-mails claiming that their lives and family were in danger unless they paid $50,000. This is an Internet scam and should be ignored. However, if your student receives an e-mail with information specific to them, or they feel threatened, they should contact Public Safety.

Construction Closes McKinley Parking Lot

With the exception of handicapped parking and a very limited number of metered spots, there is no parking at McKinley Health Center until August. If students are driving, they need to plan to park in an alternate parking area and allow themselves adequate walking time to make their appointment.

Current Accommodation Letter is Good through the Summer

Just a reminder, that your student’s current accommodation letter (RFA) is good through the end of summer so they do not need a new one for summer classes. However, if they have misplaced their current letter they need to let their case manager know and he or she will be happy to print up a new one!

Fine and Applied Arts Career Services offer Webcam Instant Message Appointments

Is your student off-campus for the summer? They can still make an appointment for an online career counseling session through Skype, Yahoo IM, or Windows Live Messenger. They will need to e-mail Michele at mplante@uiuc.edu to make an appointment.

College of Communications Convocation Online

If you were not able to attend Convocation on May 13, 2007, or you'd just like to hear the speeches and presentations again, please see the College of Communications Web site for links to the entire ceremony and the two convocation speeches.

College of Communications Students Services Has Moved

During the renovation of the sub-basement in Gregory Hall, the Student Services Center will be located in Room 129 of the Computing Applications Building at 605 E. Springfield Ave. It's just a short trip up Wright Street on the 21 or 26 bus. (Return trips can be made via the 4W bus to Wright and Chalmers.) The renovation is expected to be completed in January 2008.

Journalism Students Experience China

Professor Nancy Benson and WILL Radio News Director Tom Rogers are accompanying a group of journalism students on a working trip to China. You can see, hear and read about their experiences on the group's blog.

New I-Card

The i-card has a new look! After nearly 11 years without a major design change, the University of Illinois i-card has gotten a facelift. The new design represents several months of collaboration, consultation, and planning with campus leaders and standing ID committees.

Engineering and Computer Science Online

The distance learning program offers students not only complete online Master's degrees and online graduate certificates in Engineering and Computer Science, but also the opportunity to take online classes as an audit student, to receive professional development hours, or for University graduate credit. Students do not need to be admitted to graduate school to enroll in the distance learning courses.

Open House for “Bio Nerds”

DNA necklaces were de rigueur at this spring’s School of Molecular and Cellular Biology’s (MCB) open house. You could get one by swishing a dash of Gatorade around your cheeks for 30 seconds, and then spitting it out into a solution of dish soap and ethanol. What emerged was a three-layered concoction: ethanol on top, Gatorade and dish soap solution on the bottom, and a tiny, white speck of DNA in the middle. The DNA was then carefully scooped out and placed in a plastic vial attached to a string. Stephanie DeFlorio, an MCB major, did the scooping. Her own necklace displayed a very visible dot of DNA. “Mine is bigger because I tend to bite my cheeks,” DeFlorio says, smiling. Full Story

Olympiad Medalists Strike Gold at Illinois

When the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign hosted the National Science Olympiad in May, 2005, Chancellor Richard Herman made a bold offer: The University would offer free tuition to any gold medalist who chose to attend Illinois. “The winners of this national competition have shown themselves to be outstanding students--the kind whose curiosity, creativity and energy foster and promote the cutting-edge work for which our campus is known,” Herman said. “As one of the preeminent science and technology institutions in the world, we train the best and the brightest students.” Full Story

Liberal Arts Honor Society Celebrates 100 Years at U of I

What started as a secret society has spread to colleges and universities across the country and has now left its mark at the University of Illinois for 100 years. Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest and most distinguished national honor society for liberal arts students—and the first society to have a Greek-letter name—established a chapter at the U of I in 1907, so the group is celebrating its centennial year in style.
