News from the Mothers and Dads AssociationsMothers Weekend is this weekend! Bring the whole family for a visit to campus and be prepared for a memorable weekend with your student. Next year’s Mothers Weekend is April 11-13, 2008. I want to thank everyone for all their nice comments about the listserv. It’s great to know that this information is relevant and important to parents. One of our parents commented on how she can copy parts of this message and paste it into an email she then sends on to her student. I thought I would share this tip with everyone as another way you can support your son or daughter throughout the year. Share your thoughts on laptops vs. desktops and offer other advice about computers on the message board. Registration opened on April 2; this newsletter has some great explanations and tips to help facilitate your student’s registration process.McKinley Goes Live with the Electronic Health RecordOn July 1, 2006, McKinley Health Center will begin using the Electronic Health Record (EHR) to see patients. The electronic health record is an integral component to McKinley's goal of delivering high quality patient care. The conversion from a paper record to an electronic health record is an enormous undertaking and we are confident it will enhance care and service to our students. Beckwith Hall’s 25th AnniversaryFor 25 years, Beckwith Hall has provided residential accommodations and assistance with daily living activities for students with disabilities, and taught them the skills needed to live more independently. Please join us at the celebratory events recognizing Beckwith Hall’s milestones in service and innovation at the University of Illinois, and advancements in services/resources for people with disabilities.9th Annual Roger Ebert’s Overlooked Film FestivalThe College of Communications presents the 9th Annual Roger Ebert's Overlooked Film Festival. It will showcases 12 screenings of movies, both old and new, that Ebert thinks are good movies that were overlooked by audiences, critics and distributors. The films include studio productions and independent films.National Volunteer WeekThe Illini Union's Office of Volunteer Programs (OVP) is once more sponsoring National Volunteer Week, which is from April 15-21. National Volunteer Week is a time to honor and recognize the hundreds of individuals who put forth their time and effort to help others through service. OVP’s Kick-off Event will be on the Quad, Monday, April 16th from 11am-2pm.Seeking Applications for WYSE Summer Camp CounselorsThe Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) is looking for graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in the College of Engineering to serve as camp counselors for its annual summer camps. Sessions I and II will be held June 10-16 and July 8-14. About 40 students who will be entering their junior or senior year of high school will attend each of these two “Exploring Your Options” camps. A third camp, “Discover Engineering,” will be held during the week of July 22-28. Limited to 30 campers, “Discover Engineering” will be geared toward students entering their sophomore year in high school.Pay Rate: $700 flat fee for each session. Mellon Foundation, Lewis & Clark's Environmental Studies Program is embarking on an ambitious multi-year initiative. The goal is to further scholarly rigor and coherence in the field of environmental studies by cultivating interdisciplinary research skills among undergraduate students at Lewis & Clark and other American institutions. These students are key to the future of environmental studies, as they will serve as the next generation of environmental leaders in academic and policy settings.2007-2010 College of Education Strategic PlanFor the past 18 months, the College of Education faculty, staff, and students have been heavily engaged in developing a new roadmap for the College of the future. Cheer on this year’s up-and-coming Illini squad at St. Rita of Cascia High School, 7740 S. Western Ave in Chicago on April 14 at 1 p.m. Admission is free. The team will play at 1 p.m. on April 21 at Memorial Stadium, its final outing of spring. As part of the Spring Sports Festival, the $5 ticket fee is also good for the men’s tennis match against Minnesota and the softball game versus Ohio State, both of which start at noon.Memorial Stadium RenovationConstruction on Memorial Stadium began after the conclusion of the 2006 football season. All renovations are scheduled to be completed by the beginning of the 2008 football season. New images of the future of Memorial Stadium are frequently added to the Illinois Renaissance website.Illini Day at Wrigley FieldIllini Day at Wrigley Field is set for June 2nd, 2007. The Chicago Cubs will be taking on the Atlanta Braves. Game-time is set for 12:05 p.m. Head football coach Ron Zook will be singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the seventh inning stretch.Illinois in the NewsSchool of Music, Under the GunnNathan Gunn, U of I alumnus of the BFA program in Music, has attained a reputation for being one of the most exciting young baritones in the opera world today, according to The New York Times. In fall 2007, Gunn brings that talent and star quality home to the School of Music permanently—Nathan and his wife Julie Gunn, who earned a U of I doctorate in accompaniment, have enthusiastically joined the Music faculty on the Urbana-Champaign campus. Full StoryCollege of Business staff member wins a GrammyMeagan Hennessey is the College's Manager of Business Web Services, responsible for hundreds of pages on the College of Business web servers. Hennessey and her husband, Richard Martin, manage Archeophone Records, a label dedicated to historical recordings. On February 11, they won a Grammy award for their album "Lost Sounds: Blacks and the Birth of the Recording Industry 1891-1922."
