News from the Moms and Dads Associations

The Parent Programs Office is continually working to improve upon the resources provided to parents of Illinois students. Please take the time to fill out this anonymous survey to help us better understand the community we are serving. We appreciate your input.

Moms Weekend is almost here! This annual event takes place from April 11th to 13th. Bring the whole family for a visit to campus and be prepared for a memorable weekend with your student. Look for more information on the Moms and Dads Associations Web site.

Volunteers needed to help with the Moms Association Craft Table and Information Table. Volunteers will have the chance to meet other Illini Moms and learn more about the Association. We only ask that you give at least one hour of your time, click here for more information.

The Barrington Area Moms Club is holding a Valentines Care Package Assembly Party on Sunday, February 10th from 1:00pm to 3:00pm . It's a great way to meet other moms of college students in the area, as well as show your student you are thinking of them. For more information, contact Sharon Wojtowicz at wojtowicz99atmsn.com

The Moms and Dads Associations will be hosting the Illini Parent Spring Workshops on March 29, 2008. Scheduled speakers include the Student Health Insurance Office and the Public Safety Division will talk about the new Emergency Notification System. Experienced County Representatives and Moms Club members will talk about how to develop successful events and activities in your local area, and what you can do to stay involved with the Moms and Dads Associations and the University of Illinois. Registration is due Friday, March 14.

There are open positions on the Moms Association board just waiting for you! We have many fun committees.... Crafts and Sales, Move-in-Day Picnic, Summer Registration, Illini Parent 101 (formerly our fall conference), and Moms Weekend just to name a few, and we welcome you to get involved with just one. Come join other Illini Moms! The work is fun and does not require a huge time committment. Please help us keep our organization strong. Contact the Parent Program Office at 217-333-7063 or uofiparentsatad.uiuc.edu if interested and we can discuss details. We are slating now and will be electing new board members in April. We look forward to welcoming new Illini Moms!

The Moms Association at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is soliciting requests for funding proposals to be awarded in the Spring of 2008. The recipient will receive a monetary donation to be used to support the event and/or program submitted in the proposal.

Please urge your student to log on to the emergency system Web site at emergency.illinois.edu and enter their contact information. The Urbana-Champaign campus of the UI has launched a new emergency communication system that will alert students and faculty and staff members to crisis situations on campus through mass cell-phone text and e-mail messages. The Moms and Dads Associations work in coordination with the Parent Programs Office at the University to provide parents with up-to-date information, resources, services and programs that will help them make the most out of their students’ Illinois Experience. We also address the issues and concerns parents bring to us, with the University community and work to get the answers parents and families need. Parents Invited to View New University Home Page Design, Provide Feedback

View a mockup of the new design approved by the Chancellor and Provost for the home page of the University's Web site. Parents are encouraged to read about the data driving the design before viewing the mockup on a page that explains how the design reflects that data. All are encouraged to provide feedback by filling out an online survey. After the feedback has been gathered and analyzed, the design will be modified and presented again to the Chancellor and Provost for their approval.

Illini Union Board Calendar of Events

Check out some of fun activities the Illini Union Board has planned for the month of February. Students looking for an alternative to Unofficial or a fun night out with friends are invited to attend Illinites in Oz on February 29 from 9:00pm - 1:00am.

I-Link Career Management Program

The Career Center's new I-Link career management program has replaced the former I-Connect software. Students who were previously registered for I-Connect and had a resume and/or cover letter uploaded into the system will need to create a new account with I-Link in order to have access to jobs, internships, and on-campus interviewing opportunities.

Undergraduate Etiquette Dinner

Students are invited to come and enjoy a four-course dinner while they learn the basics of business dining etiquette. Reservations required by Sunday, February 3, 2008. $13 registration fee includes four-course meal and "Dining Skills for Today" tutorial presented by Elizabeth Reutter, etiquette consultant. Dress is business casual.

Engineering Employment Expo

All current University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign students and alumni are invited to attend the Spring Engineering Employment Expo 2008 on February 7.

Engineering Spring Career Fair

The Engineering Spring Career Fair will be held February 12 - 13 in the Illini Union at 10:00am.

18th Annual Aviation Student/Alumni Career Fair

Separating Fact from Fiction: Alumni Tell Their Job Search Stories

A panel of alumni, both recent graduates and highly experienced, working in a variety of fields, will share the ups and downs of their recent job searches. Students are welcome to attend this no-fee Feb. 13 program at the Chicago Illini Center located at 200 S. Wacker Drive, First Floor, Chicago, IL 60606. UI alumni in a variety of occupations, and with varying levels of experience, will share their recent job-search stories.

2007-2008 Student Leadership Awards

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs is seeking students who are leaders, contribute to campus, enhance cultural understanding, and are innovative and involved! Students may nominate themselves, nominate their Registered Student Organization, nominate the outstanding students that they work with, or encourage those in their organizations to nominate each other! Awards may be applicable to students of all academic levels including graduate students, and range in amounts from $250 to $3,000. Specific criteria vary by award, but all awards honor students for their exceptional leadership. The deadline for nominations is Wednesday, February 13, 2008 by noon. ExCEL (Exemplary, Committed, and Engaged Leaders) Scholarships

Students who are currently a sophomore or junior, have a 2.5 GPA, and anticipate holding a leadership role in a student organization next year, could be recognized for their leadership and be awarded a $1500 scholarship. Students can apply now for the ExCEL (Exemplary, Committed, and Engaged Leaders) Scholarship! The deadline for applications is Wednesday, February 13, 2008 by noon. Monumental Film Festival 2008

University Housing and the Illini Apple Center present The Monumental Film Festival 2008 for residents of University Housing. Students wil have the chance to make a movie and win cool prizes.

Parking Alert, Reduced Office Service Days

The Parking Department is upgrading its Parking Management Computer System in order to better serve our customers. During the transition process, beginning February 4, 2008 and continuing through the close of business on February 6, 2008, all financial transactions, such as processing citation payments, issuing or adding time to cash keys, and purchasing new permits, will not be offered. We will be able to accommodate temporary parking needs.

Student athlete named 2007 Paralympian of the Year

University of Illinois student athlete Jessica Galli has been named the 2007 Paralympian of the Year by the United States Olympic Committee. Galli, a graduate student in community health from Hillsborough, N.J., who holds three world records in women’s wheelchair track and field events, is being recognized for her outstanding contributions to Olympic sport and for exemplary sportsmanship and strength of character on and off the field. Two LAS Professors Make 'Scientific American' Top 50

Scientific American magazine recently named two LAS professors among its SciAM 50, which recognizes outstanding technological leadership by 50 individuals, teams, or companies in research, business, or policymaking each year. Jeffrey Moore, the the Murchison-Mallory Professor of Chemistry, and Robert Ghrist, professor of mathematics, were among those honored by the prestigious science magazine in its January 2008 issue. Moore was part of a University of Illinois team honored for its development of self-healing material, while Ghrist was recognized for using mathematical tools to solve key problems with networks of randomly distributed sensors.
