History

The Moms and Dads Associations at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have the distinction of being the first two parent organizations in the nation. Beginning in May 2007, the Associations welcomed all parents and families of currently enrolled students as members. All family members are invited to participate in the events and programs sponsored by the Associations, including the Dads Weekend in the fall and Moms Weekend in the spring.

We want to you and your family to have the best possible experience while your student is attending Illinois, so in collaboration the Parent Programs Office, and the Moms and Dads Associations have established goals for Illinois parents and how we will help you realize those goals.

Expected Parent Outcomes:
  • Understand the developmental changes parents and families experience when children embark on their own collegiate careers.
  • Be an effective mentor and coach for your college student.
  • Understand the college experience your student is having in today's higher education environment.
  • Establish the appropriate level of involvement in your student's collegiate career that is beneficial to you, your child and the University community. Know when and how to empower your student to take responsibility, enabling them to grow into a mature, productive and independent adult.

Role of the Parent Programs Office & Moms and Dads Associations:
  • Communicate regularly with parents of all Illinois students, developing a critical parent-university partnership.
  • Educate parents to their new role as the parent of a college student and how that evolving role affects their development as a parent; including how their lives are changing and examining how they are feeling and thinking.
  • Provide parents of Illinois students with the information and tools they need to become effective mentors and coaches to their college students throughout their collegiate career; for example, how to distinguish between normal and worrisome behavior.
  • Provide volunteer opportunities for parents and families that keep them connected to the University community and encourage the development of relationships among fellow Illini parents/families, the University and the Moms and Dads Associations.
